At fourteen, they made a pact to rock together forever. They meant it.
Over the weekend, VH1 presented the commercial free premiere of the Rock Doc documentary, Anvil! The Story of Anvil. This movie has received universal acclaim early this year. It has a Metacritic score of 82. It is a fascinating story of unrequited dreams, missed opportunities and the undying love of heavy metal music.
Back in the early 1980s when heavy metal was at its pinnacle, acts such as Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden went on to play to sell out stadiums, sell millions of records and have fame and fortune, except for one band, the Canadian based, Anvil.
Everybody is music industry knows the legend of Anvil. Metallica, Anthrax, Guns N Roses owes their success to Anvil who drifted off into obscurity.
The original members of the band, Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner have a long-standing feud with each other than might have played a part of them not succeeding. There also the fact that the band have been mismanaged for years including their current tour manager, Tiziana Arrigoni who is involved with the guitarist, Ivan Hurd.
Anvil still dreams of being famous rock stars. Life has not dealt that hand. Lips works for a catering company to make ends meet. Robb has a side job as a construction worker. Their fist love is the still the music that they love.
They are constantly screwed over at gigs when they are not being paid for their sets. They should be performing in arenas and stadiums, but they could barely fill a bar or a banquet hall.
Most of their family members think that they are not going to make it to the big time, but they band holds on to the hope that they will be famous.
Lips reach out to a British producer for their critically acclaimed album, “Metal on Metal”, Chris “CT” Tsangarides for their final shot at stardom. To work with CT, it would cost them over twelve thousand dollars. How would they get the money? Will they finally get their due or be a blip in rock history?
Director Sacha Gervasi is doing fan service for his favorite band. He used to a roadie for them in their heyday. You never know if the whole story is told. Did he try to make these guys heroes if they are not?
In the end, you want to root for the band to succeed. You want them to get their big break. It is a touching story of power of dreams and doing what is in your heart. Finding your bliss.
Judgment: Whether if you are a fan of heavy metal music or not, you will something profound in this documentary.
