Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

I caught the HBO premiere of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. I have never seen the stage production, but I did listen to the soundtrack of the show when it was revived in 2006.

If you don’t know the tale of Sweeney Todd, you should be ashamed. It’s about Benjamin Barker aka “Sweeney Todd” seeking revenge on Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) for falsely imprisoning him for over ten years. The judge wanted to be with his wife, Lucy.

After coming back to town, he visits Mrs. Lovett, a meat pie peddler, who has the “worst pies in London.” She is in love with him before he changed to the slasher barber.

They make a deal that when Sweeney kills more men than the better Lovett’s business will be. Lovett employs a boy, Toby, to help out in the shop when Sweeney killed his master, Signor Pirelli.

Also, the judge “adopted” Sweeney’s daughter, Johanna. A young man, Anthony falls in love with her when she sits at her window. What?

I have a couple of questions about the ending. Why did Toby kill Sweeney in the end? What happened to Johanna and Anthony?

I love Tim Burton’s films. This was up there with me.
