Little Children (2006)

This was a vastly underrated movie by Todd Field. I saw his other film “In the Bedroom” and I loved it.

I felt the same way with this movie. It takes a small quiet town in Connecticut and made it speak volumes with all the interconnected stories about infidelity, unrequited love, loneliness and redemption.

With the title, “Little Children”, you know there would not be any cheery subject matter. I sympathized by Jackie Earle Haley’s character. It asks the eternally question, “When you paid your debt to society, are you truly forgiven?” The town didn’t think so. He was eternally punished for an indiscretion. So very tragic.

Kate Winslet is fearless. I know that she has done these “unhappy housewife” type parts before, but she radiates onscreen.

Patrick Wilson and Jennifer Connelly were vastly underrated in this movie. I loved the way that Connelly was comfortable in their boring marriage and Wilson wanted to escape with Kate’s character.

Go see this movie. The subject matter is a little tough to shallow, but it’s satisfying.
